AVOCADO OIL VS OLIVE OIL

Why you should switch from olive oil to avocado oil.

You have probably been cooking with olive oil for quite some time now. You trust it. Its been a part of your monthly grocery shopping list, a part of your cooking, a part of your health-conscious lifestyle for quite some time now. But here’s why you should look at making this crucial, life-altering switch.

Fat composition – Avocado oil contains over 70% monounsaturated, 16% saturated and 14% polyunsaturated fat. As a rule of thumb, saturated and monounsaturated fats are good for your health, but you should stay away from polyunsaturated fats when it comes to vegetable oils. Avocado oil scores well in that area because it has over 85% of those beneficial fatty acids. Avocados have a lot of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Carefully processed avocado oil retains many of those nutrients. Although olive oil has similar fat content as avocado oil and nutrients, two of the primary polyphenols in olive oil have shown to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation. That’s critical because only oxidized LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) is harmful to your health.

Smoke point – Avocado oil has a relatively high smoke point, making it ideal for cooking at high heat. The avocado oil Healthy Muse has a smoke point of 500 degrees Fahrenheit. That makes it a perfect candidate for cooking, frying or searing. Hence it is a good choice for stir-fry recipes, deep frying even. It is ideal for searing meats and frying in a wok. Olive oil’s smoke point varies depending on the processing and the grade. Light olive oil has a smoke point of 430°F, making it suitable for medium-heat frying. Extra virgin olive oil has a low smoke point, around 220°F. It is unsuitable for high-temperature cooking or frying. This can lead to the formation of toxic compounds and harmful free radicals which are carcinogenic. So even in this case, avocado oil is better than olive oil.

Avocado oil taste – Refined avocado oil doesn’t have a very distinctive strong taste, unlike olive oil. Avocado oil is superior to olive oil in terms of taste. Olive oil has a taste that’s too distinct and hence can’t be used for every kind of cooking. Avocado oil, on the other hand, has a distinctive buttery flavor which it imparts to your food.  It is way mellow than olive oil and can be used to almost any kind of cooking or even baking without altering the taste too much. It’s much nicer than olive oil for cooking eggs and other dishes where you really notice the flavor of the oil used.

Health benefits – Avocado oil contains betasitosterol in high concentrations which is a phytosterol, a compound that helps reduce cholesterol absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Olive oil too contains betasitosterol but avocado oil contains twice its amount. Both olive oil and avocado oil contain proteins but avocado oil comparatively contains higher amounts. In fact, there are some essential proteins that are present in avocado but not in olive oil!

Antioxidants – Vitamin E is one of the most well-known antioxidants. It protects the skin from environmental stress and free radicals in the surroundings that keep you from forming wrinkles early.  Avocado oil is rich in vitamin E antioxidant that keeps you looking young and bright. Olive oil, on the other hand, contains negligible amounts of antioxidants. Avocado oil is also way better for skin as a moisturizer and for hair loss than olive oil.

Although both are healthy oils with a plethora of benefits, I use them differently. Personally, I have both extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil in my pantry. But while I may reach for that bottle of olive oil for cold use such as salad dressings and pasta, I choose avocado oil from Healthy Muse for just about everything else ; cooking, as a moisturizer and to even give myself a good hair massage!
